Coaching, Practice and Competitions for Junior Golfers from age 5 upwards

Farnham Golf Club has a small but committed Junior Committee that is seeking to provide all juniors with an opportunity to develop their golfing skills and have a great deal of fun putting those skills into practice. The approach that is being adopted is to provide activities for juniors of all ages and all abilities.

In August 2013 the Club was awarded GolfMark Accreditation to demonstrate that through a national scheme it provides recognised junior and beginner friendly golf facilities. The three key areas within the golf club which were assessed for GolfMark are: Coaching & Playing; Club Environment (including sports equity & ethics); and Child Protection & Duty of Care.

To describe what is happening at Farnham Golf Club we will begin with our programme for the youngest golfers and work through the various age groups:

Farnham Golf Club Junior Academy

The Club’s Junior Academy (JA) has been running for about two years now for youngsters who are new to golf or have little experience of the game. The aim of the JA is to provide a balanced combination of coaching, practice and competitions to enable the members to develop their skills and have the satisfaction of measuring their progress in terms of handicap improvements and other measured achievements.

The JA meets regularly for coaching on Saturday mornings at 9.30am for an hour and on Sunday afternoons at 2.00pm when the more advanced members can go out on the course; at 3.00pm there is more coaching available for the other members. All this is available for the modest annual subscription of less than £90.00. The youngest members are Jake and Caleb both of whom are five year’s old.

Competitive Golf for Juniors

The Surrey County Golf Union (SCGU) and the Surrey Ladies’ County Golf Association (SLCGA) are amongst the most successful county administrations in the country providing for junior golf. The Farnham Golf Club junior members of all ages are enjoying a great deal of involvement with the county activities.

Some of the JA members, both girls and boys, have been very successful in the Young Improver Group’s (YIGs) events for juniors who need only to be able to manage 9 holes on a short course.

The next step is the highly successful Rookie Tour for juniors normally with CONGU handicaps. Several of our under 14 juniors did well in the Tour last year, culminating in an appearance on the Sky television “Game Changers” programme.

Our juniors have also won places on the very competitive county coaching programmes – the CAP (County Academy Programme) for girls and the Futures programme for boys. Farnham is proud to have over a dozen junior girls in our section of whom Polly, Liberty and Lottie have earned their fair share of success.

Junior Member Club Competitions

The Club’s more established juniors, being mainly over 13 year’s old, are also making their mark at club and county level. The Club has a programme of fun competitions and matches that are open to all juniors.

The events take place at least once or twice a month throughout the year and within the spring to autumn window there are additional and varied events.

The Club has three juniors who regularly represent the county and there are others who are on county coaching programmes and have enjoyed a lot of success in events organised by other clubs. Tom, Luke and Jack have represented the county and Jack has been the junior and adult Club Champion for the last three years.

The Club is indebted to the Parents & Mentors who regularly support the juniors in their events. We have to remember that golf is a game where good support and guidance will enable the juniors to make the most of the opportunities open to them.

Golf is probably the only game played without a referee and in wide open spaces, which require understanding and awareness of the complexities and hazards that can be experienced. The combination of support and gentle guidance provided by the adults has proved to be of enormous value for which the Club is very appreciative.
